Started windsurfing in 1980. Didn’t know anyone in Hawaii so rang the Naish shop in 1983 and Robby’s mum Carole fixed me up with kit and accommodation.
There I met the late great Angus Chater and together produced the 1st short board book in the UK ‘The Windsurfing Fun Board Handbook’. Sold 120,000 copies world wide and was much imitated (and improved) over the years.
Spent 3 months of the year in Hawaii doing water photography, shooting for American WindSurf and German Surf magazine and the 1st shots of the Walkman Sport for Sony.
Gave up windsurfing in 1989 due to families and building a business.
Met fellow team rider Steve Carpenter in 2001 when I built a house in Portugal and was persuaded to revisit windsurfing. I was shocked by the way the sport and equipment had all changed since ’89 and he was shocked to see a Fanatic Ultra Board and 1st generation NP Combat Wave in my garage!
I threw myself back into the sport, somewhat fanatically some members of the family would say, and now retired, I divide my time between the UK south coast, Peniche, Portugal (windsurfing’s best kept secret) and following the wind throughout the year videoing my friends to make them look good!
Typical year being Oz/SA, Margarita, Morocco, Ireland, Rhodes, Mauritius, Jeri.
Having acheived my aim to forward before 60, and been branded ‘A one trick pony’ by my wife I’m looking towards Back Loops and can only dream of a Ponch!
