Take your partner by the hand: Great Windsurfing Holiday with a non-windsurfer

    22nd Jul 2008 @ 09:39:57 AM

sSs Team Rider, Carl Tomlinson, continues his recommendations for great windsurfing venues, this time with the needs of a non-windsurfing partner in mind. Having just come back from Lanzorote he has this to say:

I’m sure many readers of this piece who have partners will be wondering “where can I go that’s good for windsurfing but also that their partner can spend time on the beach without getting sandblasted and also has some nice places to stay & eat out at?” Costa Teguise on Lanzorote is not a bad compromise.

Sure the waves are soft and mushy but they’re awesome for jumps and when the wind is lighter and the chop is small its not a bad freestyle spot for us mere mortals. The PWA was there the previous week and all the top pros were pulling off all their moves 10 foot in the air off the waves!!

See the PWA website for more.

Most days the wind is right for 5.5m or 5.0m sails. However most people use a 5.8, 5.2m or 4.7m and have a single 80-85l wave board. The waves are approx ¼ mile from the launch in La Cucharcos bay which is sandy but in a wind shadow caused by the huge Las Salinas hotel. So it can be tricky getting from the beach to the break. Once out to the break you can sail upwind to Las Charcos which is a small horseshoe shaped bay ringed by large sea defences. The waves wrap round the sea defences and into the mouth of the bay and when the swell is big enough you can get some fun down the line rides off the from the upwind sea defence into the mouth of the bay. When the tide is out it’s too shallow to do this and no one sails in Charcos. Also Charcos can be a very nice flat water spot for freestyle, but it needs high tide otherwise the wind becomes too gusty as it gets disturbed on the high sea defences.

If you want to hire gear rather than take your own, there are two hire centres, mainly catering for the French and German clients. Windsurf Paradise and Club Nathile Simon have Fanatic/Pryde and Goya/JP/Pryde respectively so obviously all us RRD/Ezzy riders will be taking our own gear as it’s much better!!

I took my TT100, 85 WaveCult 5.5/5.0/4.5/4.0m Ezzy Waves, I didn’t use the 4.0 and used the 4.5 one day. First week I sailed my TT100 and second week mainly my Cult as the conditionals got more wavey as the trip went on.

The general standard of sailing is “Euro” as described in the Jem Hall UTube video, but there are a small number number of visitors, locals and shop hands who have some good moves dialled in freestyle and waves.

    Enjoy.
