Windsurf Magazine 80 -87 lt board test - Wave Cult 84 2006

At a Glance:
The Wave Cult name has a long and distinguished history in the RRD range and returns for the new season to replace the Wave Swallow.
The 84 is the middle hull in a five board line-up, each possessing a very short and rounded plan shape. The volume is distributed evenly throughout its length, whilst the deck has a definite dome to it in the rear, tapering down to thin defined rails and a pintail. Complete with comfortable straps and shock-absorbing deckpads, it a very well finished board, dressed in bright distinctive graphics.
Ride and Handling:
If we had to choose one word to define the riding style and nature of the Wave Cult, the first word that would immediately spring to mind is 'smooth'. Rising onto the plane progressively, it simply glides across the surface of the water, as if cushioned on a bed of air. This sensation is largely down to the
excellent thick deckpads (incorporating heel bumpers and raised tiers gainst which you can push more energy into the fin), which, coupled with the dome of the deck and supportive footstraps, makes you feel so safe and omfortable that you are often in two minds whether you want to change tack or not! Whilst its riding fashion is the exact antithesis of a direct and involving style, do not be fooled as the Wave Cult's ease masks its capability and response - put in the hands of the more aggressive sailor and it can be pushed as hard as they dare.
Manoeuvres:
Introducing the 84 to a wave break and you are left in no doubt as to where its credentials lie. Its super smooth and agile manner shines through once again as it engages effortlessly and bites beautifully, cutting clean efficient arcs around the break. Effective in any wave environment, the Cult is receptive to front or back foot pressure, and with its even predictable nature is simply a wonderful tutor to the novice wave sailor, being forgiving of
any clumsy technique. The pro sailor or specialist wave rider may crave more precision and sharpness in their board's response, in which case they should look at RRD's Hardcore Wave range, but for most, the Cult's ease will flatter any riding style, and will see you carving the smoothest bottom turns you could imagine.
Verdict:
With a definite bias towards wave riding, the Wave Cult is supremely smooth, easy and controllable in any environment, making it one of the most comfortable 85L boards around to sail, and giving it masses of user appeal. |
